AI, translational solutions big part of cancer center scientific retreat

The University of Arizona Cancer Center’s annual showcase of research lived well up to its promise this year, with multiple participants from six divisions of the Department of Medicine — and new U of A chief AI and data science officer David Ebert, PhD. It was largely a full house for the 2025 University of Arizona Cancer Center Scientific Retreat hosted Nov. 14 at the Health Sciences Innovation Building.

Dr. Juanita Merchant elected fellow of American Association for Cancer Research

The GI Division chief at the College of Medicine – Tucson may postpone her induction because of a conflict over the date due to her role as Association of American Physicians’ current president. Merchant received notice of the honor with a letter dated Nov. 20 from Margaret Foti, PhD, MD, CEO of the American Association for Cancer Research and was a bit overwhelmed by the commendation.

U of A researchers awarded federal grant to explore topical immunoprevention for skin cancer

Researchers from the University of Arizona Comprehensive Cancer Center received $917,000 as part of a two-phase grant to investigate novel immune-based approaches to prevent keratinocytic skin cancers, which are the most common form of cancer. An additional $2 million in funding is available contingent upon the successful completion of milestones.
