Award Terms and Conditions

Award terms and conditions include submitting progress reports halfway through the project, at the conclusion of the project, and for fours years following the end of the project. Some awards also include presenting project progress to to UACC's Scientific Leadership Council.

Required progress reports ask principal investigators to report on Study Results, Cancer Relevance, Peer Reviewed Publications, Abstracts, book chapters, and other publications, Peer Reviewed Funding, Clinical Trials, and Budget Burn Rate.

This award support collaborative translational research pilot projects which include partnerships between at least one UACC basic or population scientist and one UACC clinical or translational researcher. The UACC also strongly supports project discussions with Community Outreach and Engagement (COE) to ensure the relevance of the translational projects to the catchment area.

These funds are intended to be seed funds that will rapidly result in external, cancer-focused funding. Of particular interest are projects that focus on the development of translational cancer therapies that lead to preliminary preclinical data with a clear pathway to external grant submissions, and/or to the development of an investigator-initiated clinical interventional treatment trial (IIT) for cancer treatment based upon UACC science.

  • Funding amount: $100,000 per award. Acceptable budgets may be for one year or spread over 2 years maximum for $50,000 per year.
  • Award term: One to two years
  • Application window: August - September
  • Application link: Applications have closed for FY25

Note: Publication of results in any presentation, publication, or press release will need to include the following acknowledgment: "Research reported in this [publication/press release] was supported by the National Cancer Institute of the National Institutes of Health under award number P30CA023074”.

This award will support innovative research in cancer engineering that is conducted by a faculty team consisting of at least one member of the UACC in basic, clinical, translational, or population sciences, and a faculty member of the College of Engineering. We are interested in new projects that will lead to external funding in areas including but not limited to tissue engineering, tumoroids, imaging diagnostics, tumor mechanobiology, extracellular matrix biology, technologies that improve drug screening/therapeutics delivery, computational modeling of cancer and devices.

  • Funding amount: Up to $100,000
  • Number of awards granted: One
  • Award term: One year
  • Application window: August - September
  • Application link: Applications have closed for FY25

This award provides intensive mentored support in patient-oriented cancer research to clinical faculty. (MD, MD/Ph.D., DO) near the beginning of their independent research careers. Career development includes didactic training; participation in relevant UACC symposia, retreats, workshops, and grand rounds culminating in the preparation or an impactful investigator-initiated trial (IIT).

  • Funding amount: Up to .25cFTE per scholar
  • Number of awards granted: Up to two
  • Award term: Up to two years
  • Application window: May - June
  • Application link: Applications have closed for FY25

This award supports innovative and impactful research projects that focus on the UACC’s Research Themes: Cancer and the Environment, Novel Therapeutics and Preventive Interventions, and Cancer Imaging and Bioengineering.

This award is intended to be seed funds for one year that will rapidly result in an external cancer-focused submission. The UACC encourages multi-investigator applications to foster intra- and inter-programmatic interactions as well as multi-investigator external cancer grant applications.

Applicants are strongly encouraged to discuss their pilot application with their respective Program Leaders prior to submission.

  • Funding amount: up to $50,000
  • Award term: One year
  • Application window: August - September
  • Application link: Applications have closed for FY25

Note: Publication of results in any presentation, publication, or press release will need to include the following acknowledgment: "Research reported in this [publication/press release] was supported by the National Cancer Institute of the National Institutes of Health under award number P30CA023074”.

These awards are determined by Research Program Leaders each year based on available programmatic funding.

Goals of the University of Arizona Cancer Center (UACC) Strategic Plan include stimulating basic science research and its ultimate human translation. This seed funding program is intended to provide support for teams to submit a large multi-investigator application (i.e., P01, U01, etc.; not multi-PI R01s) within 1 to 1.5 years from the date of award.

Applicants are encouraged to collaborate with members of other NCI-designated cancer centers.

  • Funding amount: up to $100,000
  • Award term: One year
  • Application window: Apply by Friday, January 31, 2025
  • Application link: Apply via Arizona Cultivate

This award supports cancer-focused Research Project (R01) grants (RPG) or their equivalent that have received a score close to the funding range with the end goal of resubmission of a highly responsive and competitive application. These awards are intended to enable investigator(s) to resubmit an application to achieve external funding, preferably from National Cancer Institute (NCI). Funds will be awarded to PIs who are productive, based on years in rank, have a strong plan for addressing reviewer concerns, and a clear timeline for submission.

This award provides funds to facilitate revision of cancer-focused Research Project (R01) grants (RPG) or their equivalent scoring within 10 percentage points from the funding line for established investigators and 20 percentage points for early-stage investigators (i.e. someone who has completed their terminal research degree or end of post-graduate clinical training, whichever date is later, within the past 10 years and who has not previously competed successfully as PD/PI for a substantial NIH independent research award).

  • Funding amount: $50,000-$100,000
  • Award term: One year
  • Application window: rolling
