Spirituality and the cancer journey

The science behind it

Holistic care takes a whole person approach to health by addressing the physical, emotional, spiritual and mental well-being of the individual. Studies suggest that spiritual well-being may help individuals better cope with the emotional and psychological effects of cancer and promote resilience and a sense of inner peace. It can be an important source of comfort and solace.

Many patients and caregivers have found that a spiritual or religious practice can help manage stress, alleviate anxiety, and reduce depression.

  • Spirituality can have various meanings for different people, shaped by their cultural, religious, and philosophical values.
  • One definition of spirituality is "the aspect of humanity that refers to the way individuals seek and express meaning and purpose and the way they experience their connectedness to the moment, to self, to others, to nature, and to the significant or sacred ." (1)
  • Spirituality can be expressed through various practices, which may include, among others: engaging with one's faith and religion, offering service to others and showing compassion, spending time in nature, creating art or music, participating in rituals and ceremonies, practicing meditation and mindfulness, and reading sacred texts. • Facing a major life event, such as a cancer diagnosis, may cause some individuals to experience spiritual distress.
