The Biostatistics and Bioinformatics Shared Resource (BBSR) at the University of Arizona Cancer Center (UACC) brings together expertise in experimental design, statistical analysis, genomic and proteomic analysis, biologic pathway analysis, clinical trials, statistical computing, and database applications.
In 2020, the Bioinformatics Shared Resource was combined with the existing Biostatistics Shared Resource to create a cohesive team that can provide a single framework for all quantitative aspects of a study, including rigorous integration of statistical design and ‘omics data analysis. The BBSR provides efficient statistical design, accurate data management, appropriate data analyses and interpretation, as well as innovations in statistical design and multi-‘omic data modeling, to ensure UACC investigators achieve their scientific goals.
The BBSR is led by Dr. Denise Roe. Biostatistics services are provided by three additional faculty biostatisticians, a PhD analyst, three MS analysts, and a program coordinator. Bioinformatics services are provided by one faculty bioinformatician and a TBN PhD/MS bioinformatician. The faculty have expertise in clinical trial design, cluster-randomized trials, patient-reported outcomes, survival analysis, missing data, high-dimensional data analysis, statistical genetics, multi-‘omics data integration, network analysis, and algorithm development.

- Integrated biostatistical and bioinformatics analysis planning for grant applications (including translation of scientific objectives into statistically testable hypotheses, sample size / power justifications, and framing of analysis plans)
- Biostatistical and bioinformatics analysis of user-generated and publicly available data, and subsequent preparation of reports and manuscripts
- Monitoring clinical study progress (accrual reporting, data completeness, and outcome ascertainment)
- Data and software management (through OnCore, REDCap, GitHub, and high-performance computing)
- Clinical protocol development (sample size justification and development of appropriate statistical analysis approaches)
- Statistical review of UACC protocols by service on the Scientific Review Committee
- Monitoring study safety and data integrity through service on the Data and Safety Monitoring Board
- Education and training (including presentations in workshops for clinical fellows and seminars for UArizona Cancer Center Research Programs)
