In the news: At national cancer summit, Garcia discusses barriers to health care for cancer patients who are underrepresented

On May 12, Cancer center member David Garcia, PhD, an assistant professor in the Mel and Enid Zuckerman College of Public Health was a panel participant at the University of Arizona, attended the National Comprehensive Cancer Network Oncology Policy Summit in Washington, D.C. He discussed structural and systemic barriers to health care that impact cancer prevention and survivorship, especially for people in underserved and under resourced communities. The summit focused on improving care coordination between primary care and oncology providers.
"There is a significant need to address these barriers by developing transformative care teams that understand the solution is not a ‘one size fits all’ approach," Garcia said. "A team-based approach which accounts for an individual’s demographic, social/cultural factors, and unique healthcare needs will ultimately help us take steps closer to achieving equitable health care access for all."
