Cancer center’s Community Outreach and Engagement offer cancer resources for refugees at health forum

At the Second Annual Refugee Health Forum at the U of A College of Medicine – Tucson, Monica Yellowhair, PhD, interim associate director of the cancer center’s Department of Community Outreach and Engagement, discussed the importance of cancer prevention and early detection, especially among the newest people to live in southern Arizona.

Yellowhair brought to the Jan 30 event useful resources for refugees. It was attended by more than 90 participants from across the refugee health and resettlement sectors.
A team of researchers, including cancer center member Julie Armin, PhD, presented their research on refugees with disabilities and discussed key recommendations and next steps for improving support.

Sarah Yeo, PhD, a fellow in the NCI-funded T32 Cancer Prevention and Control Postdoctoral Fellowship Program, organized the event. The T32 offers a multidisciplinary mentored environment to increase understanding of cancer prevention and improve quality of life for survivors.
