Phoenix church strives to expand skin cancer awareness
The idea that people of color do not get skin cancer is a myth
This KPNX 12 (Phoenix, AZ) feature story details the efforts of a former University of Arizona Skin Cancer Institute (STEP UP Program) student, Lauryn White, to collaborate with the New Home Baptist Church in Phoenix, Arizona, and bring skin cancer awareness to the African American community, which suffers disproportionately from negative outcomes of melanoma. Dylan Miller of University of Arizona Skin Cancer Institute, and Kelly Palmer, member of the Cancer Prevention and Control Program at the University of Arizona Cancer Center, offer important perspectives about this prevention project, supported by a Mayo Comprehensive Cancer Center Community Mini Grant, in this feature piece.
