Cancer Center to host breast cancer symposium

The University of Arizona Cancer Center will host the inaugural Ginny L. Clements Breast Cancer Research Institute Symposium on May 5 from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Health Sciences Innovation Building Main Atrium. This event will feature talks by several of the nation’s leading experts in breast cancer research, about innovative methods for prevention, diagnosis, and care. While the event is geared primarily toward researchers and clinicians in the professional field of oncology, it’s also open to the public, and anyone interested may register to attend.

“Events like this are an opportunity for us to showcase the amazing work being done at the University of Arizona, and to see what other leading centers are doing across the nation,” Cancer Center Director Joann Sweasy said. “We want to encourage collaboration.” Dr. Sweasy, who holds the Nancy C. and Craig M. Berge Endowed Chair for the University of Arizona Cancer Center Director, said that the Center will hold similar events in the future, and that events like this are crucial to the Cancer Center gaining the national recognition that it deserves.

Opening remarks will be made by Dr. Robert C. Robbins, University of Arizona President; Dr. Joann Sweasy, Director of the University of Arizona Cancer Center; and Ginny L. Clements, breast cancer survivor and philanthropist. The featured keynote speaker is Dr. Patricia LoRusso, from Yale University School of Medicine. Other reknowned speakers include Dr. Jennifer Litton, University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center; Dr. Robert Hoffman, professor emeritus from University of California San Diego, and Dr. Barbara Pockaj from Mayo Clinic Phoenix.
