Helicobacter pylori Infection: A Woven Investigation of Prevalence and Risk Factors in Northern Arizona
Gastric cancer, also known as stomach cancer, is the third leading cause of cancer death globally. Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) plays a role in the healthy human gut, but it is also associated with multiple chronic diseases, including gastric cancer. Rates for stomach cancer are 3-4 times higher among the Navajo Nation compared to the non-Hispanic white population in Arizona. The Partnership for Native American Cancer Prevention (NACP), a partnership between the University of Arizona and Northern Arizona University, funded a series of community and clinically based studies to understand the frequency of this infection and risk factors associated with the infection that could lead to reduction of both the infection and stomach cancer incidence among the Navajo population. Team leaders from the Navajo Healthy Stomach Project will present quantitative and qualitative data from these studies and opportunities for further research.
