CTOP retreat explores innovative ideas, trials and awards

The University of Arizona Cancer Center Clinical Translational Oncology Program had their annual retreat on Oct. 25, in the Health Sciences Innovation Building. Charles Hsu, MD, PhD, medical director of the U of A Cancer Center Clinical Trials Office, spoke on "Approach to Pharma: Show Me the Money," followed by a discussion on ideas for investigator initiated trials. Junaid Arshad, MD, assistant professor and clinical scholar in the U of A Department of Medicine, and Ricklie Julian, MD, assistant professor in the Department of Medicine, presented CTOP investigator initiated trial updates, followed by Sharad Khurana, MD, assistant professor in the Department of Medicine, presenting how the addition of PD-1 blockade to CAR-T cell therapy in adult patients with R/R-B-ALL will result in higher complete remission and relapse free survival rates.
The day ended with examining two CTOP pilot awards: "Role of Secreted Phospholipase A2 in Driving the Pathogenesis of Lymphoid and Non-Small Cell Lung Cancers" by Floyd "Ski" Chilton, PhD, professor in nutritional sciences, associate director of the BIO5 Institute, and "Targeting Mismatch Repair Protein MLH1," with Rui Xiong, PhD, assistant professor of pharmacology and toxicology.
