Tomas Nuño named 2013 Hispanic Health Services Research Scholar

Tomas Nuño, PhD, a postdoctoral research associate in the University of Arizona Cancer Center's R25T Cancer Prevention and Control Fellowship Program, was recently named one of 10 Hispanic Health Services Research Scholars nationally.

The 2013 scholars are the first class of the Hispanic-Serving Health Professions Schools' program, funded by the Department of Health and Human Services, Office of Minority Health.

The 12-month program will provide a supportive environment for the development of skills and knowledge in secondary data analysis of national and state health datasets on Hispanic health research topics. 

The group of 10 scholars from around the nation each will be identifying a mentor; engaging in analytic studies of state or national datasets to study Hispanic healthcare research topics; and meeting quarterly to discuss challenges and participate in online lectures.

Dr. Nuño's research focuses on cervical, colorectal, breast and prostate cancers in underserved populations, including racial/ethnic and rural populations.

Hispanic-Serving Health Professions Schools (HSHPS) is a 501(c)3 member based non-profit organization established in 1996 as part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ “Hispanic Agenda for Action” initiative, with the intention of addressing the mounting public health issue of providing quality and culturally competent healthcare to Hispanics living in the United States through academic development, research initiatives, and training.
