Dr. Watts is working to develop a rapid pipeline to go from sample to pathogen identification in less than 12 hours to improve management of infectious disease. Dr. Watts utilizes next-generation sequencing to perform whole genome analysis of pathogens and works on methods of pathogen isolation, controlling false positives, and data analysis that allow both 16s rRNA sequencing and whole genome sequencing without the need for culture.
