Cancer Focus
We know that 5-10% of cancers are hereditary (a risk passed from parent to child). Knowledge of a hereditary cancer risk allows for early detection and prevention strategies. My job as a cancer genetic counselor is to evaluate the likelihood that cancer risk for an individual and/or family is hereditary and to provide information about cancer genetics, genetic testing and personalized cancer screening options. I assist patients with decisions regarding genetic testing, with test interpretation, and serve as a resource for families to understand how genetics contributes to cancer risks in their family. I am passionate about community education and broadening the availability of clinical genetic counseling services.
