Supportive Care

The Supportive Oncology Research Team (SORT) supports studies on the prevention or treatment of acute and chronic symptoms related to cancer care. This includes the impact on the quality of life of patients, study of novel therapies for supportive care, infection prevention, biosimilar development in cancer care, pharmacoeconomics, interventional medicine and pain and palliative care.

The University of Arizona’s Supportive Oncology Research Team, is a multidisciplinary team comprised of Medical Oncologists, Hematologists, Pain/Palliative Care Physicians, Psychiatry, Translational Researchers, Radiation Oncology and Pharmacy who have been undertaking research on a range of supportive care to help with patient well being and the side effects of treatment as well as developing and validating quality of life measures, assessing the psychosocial impact of cancer and looking at new ways to leverage technology to enhance and deliver oncology care. The team is one of the first in the country to develop integrated studies supporting cancer care treatments to improve outcomes for the University of Arizona Cancer Center Patients.

SORT currently houses a host of clinical studies in supportive care including quality of life studies, nausea and vomiting therapies, novel agents for cancer-related fatigue as well as novel therapies to support infection prevention in our patient population. The team is also working to bring in novel therapies of care to our cancer patients at the University of Arizona to improve side effects of cancer treatment and address adherence and compliance of therapies.
