U of A Cancer Center director awarded prestigious Spence Medal

Dan Theodorescu, MD, PhD, the Nancy C. and Craig M. Berge Endowed Chair and director of the University of Arizona Comprehensive Cancer Center, has been awarded the Spence Medal, one of the most distinguished honors presented by the American Association of Genitourinary Surgeons. The Spence Medal recognizes outstanding lifetime contributions to the field of urology through research, innovation, leadership, mentorship, and service.

The award celebrates Dr. Theodorescu’s extraordinary impact on translational research, though his discoveries such as showing the role of the Y chromosome in cancer, his sustained commitment to innovations advancing precision cancer care such as the Molecular Twin and cancer scientist development though the Convergent Science Virtual Cancer Center.

“I am deeply honored and humbled to receive the Spence Medal,” Dr. Theodorescu said. “This recognition reflects the generosity and guidance of exceptional mentors, the collaboration and friendship of colleagues, and the collective work of my laboratory and many dedicated teams. I share this honor with all those who have supported and inspired me throughout my career.”

As director of the U of A Cancer Center, Dr. Theodorescu leads one of the nation’s National Cancer Institute Designated Comprehensive cancer centers, guiding efforts in discovery, clinical innovation, prevention, and community engagement to improve cancer outcomes across Arizona and beyond.

Dr. Theodorescu emphasized the importance of mentorship and community in shaping his career and highlighted the role of family support in sustaining a life dedicated to medicine and science.

“Above all, I’m grateful to my family,” Dr. Theodorescu said. “My wife, Diane, and our children, Claire and Thomas, have been my constant source of love, encouragement, and perspective. Their unwavering support gives meaning to every professional milestone.”

The Spence Medal is named in honor of Harry Spence, MD and is awarded to individuals who exemplify the highest standards of excellence in the field. Past recipients include leaders whose careers have shaped the direction of genitourinary research and practice worldwide.
